T104.1 -Screen Recording
Screencastify is browser extension for chrome. The website is at www.screencastify.com

Saving
- There is a free version and a paid version.
- The free version has 10 min max time limit, 50 videos/month and a screencastify watermark.
- The paid version is $2/month/user paid annually -- no time limit, unlimited videos, no watermark, crop and trim recording, export as .mp4 or gif
- The native file format (file extension) for this is .webm
- The saving on the free version is a little confusing... you can "download" the file -- in which case you will download it anywhere you want on your machine with the .webm format (or mp4 if you have paid version). You can also "share" the video -- to google drive or youtube -- it has a get link setting -- if you don't click that and click a different permission and then click the get link before the download, it changes the share settings on the video (a bug?)
To load
- Go to Google/chrome Webstore (3dots/more tools/extensions/get more extensions OR Apps/Webstore) or go to www.screencastify.com (but I'd always suggest going to chrome webstore).
- If at webstore, search for: Screencastify
Accessing once Loaded:
- It will show up as a black box with white dots on each side in your icons to right of search bar in chrome browser. May have to click the 3 dots to see those. it will NOT show up in your Apps page as this is a browser extension not an app.
Using:
- Click on black icon
- Options presented are Tab, Desktop, Cam
- If you click desktop it will give options for which monitor and it also gives option there for a tab only. The onscreen drawing tool not avail when screen option is selected.
- If you click tab here vs clicking desktop, it defaults to the tab you are on, so you must initiate from desired recording tab. The drawing tools are avail in tab mode only. When recording or paused, a blue dot shows up in the tab.

Saving
- This was a little confusing.
- When you are done with the video it will popup for viewing. There is a cloud icon on the right. It will start saving automatically to Google Drive/Screencasitfy folder (it creates that folder by itself. not a fan of that but oh well). As it is saving that cloud icon will show progress.
- It appears you can also upload this automatically to Google Drive and/or Youtube with various permissions on it too
Embedding webm video in weebly
Bugs/Issues
- You ahve the ability to save the videos directly to drive without downloading. click on the video in g drive and it will go to a preview screen. From there, you need to popout to full screen. From there click on the three dot menu and select "embed" for the code. You would think the embed code might be part of the first screen but it is not...

Bugs/Issues
- If you only record a tab and not the desktop, it may not record any popup windows. I did a recording on chrome book of a tab, and it didn't show any bank of america popups and it didn't show the chrome book popups for save location and such. I redid video with desktop selected and no problem
- Microphone -- the mic on my pc wasn't enough for good suond. I put a headset on and plugged in and that went well. First time I had mic too close and it picked up my breathing. You can test mic before starting -- very small icon next to mic that will move if you talk. I think hat first time I saw some red come up so that would have been a clue.
Other
I own Blueberry Software's Flashback Screen Recorder -- it's is a full blown screen recorder and editor. I like it but as with all things it has a ton of features and stuff, and if you don't use it regularly it is a little hard to manage.
From a video on youtube I found these recommendations for other solutions. i remember when I was searching for a solution, Cam Studio and Camtasia were the big ones -- I think I picked Flashback because it was powerful but not huge and price was right.....
Free
And as mentioned the paid one I also have is Blueberry Software's Flashback Screen Recorder
